This is a Pennsylvania German zither typically found in Pennsylvania Dutch counties and known as the predecessor to the Appalachian mountain dulcimer. It can be fretted like a mountain dulcimer on double melody strings that run over wooden frets (pictured) or a narrow fretboard (Americanized version). The other three strings are strictly drones.
The "Americanized" version is made with a black walnut body, a Western red cedar top, and a thin black walnut fretboard with metal frets. It tends to hold up better than the wooden fret version with respect to wear on the frets. It is tuned with zither pins and comes with a tuning wrench.
